Prostate cancer is a disease that affects the male reproductive system. It is three times more common in men over the age of 65. The development of prostate cancer can be caused by genetics, diet, and lifestyle choices. Risk factors may include obesity, high blood pressure, and high alcohol and red meat consumption. One way to minimize the risk of prostate cancer is to avoid certain cancer-causing foods, such as: 1. Cured and processed meats High consumption of smoked, salted, pickled, and fermented meats is associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. These meats contain carcinogenic nitrate compounds and heterocyclic amines (HCA). Heterocyclic amines are formed when meat is cooked or processed in a way that breaks down muscle tissue, fat, and protein. Both nitrates and heterocyclic amines have been found to promote prostate cancer. 2. Fatty fast foods Fatty fast foods and other deep-fried foods may contain trans and saturated fats. These foods are thought to promote prostate cancer by increasing estrogen levels in the body, which is an initial risk factor for prostate cancer. Fatty foods also contain high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are cancer-causing toxins that build up in the body over time.
