Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that affects approximately 7.5 million Americans, or 2% of the population. However, the following foods may also trigger psoriasis or sensitive skin:

1. Eggplant

Brinjal, or eggplant is a commonly consumed food that shouldn’t be eaten if you have skin disorders like psoriasis. This is because eggplant contains a solanine chemical, which can cause dermatitis. This chemical can trigger the symptoms of psoriasis if it’s consumed by those who have the genetic disposition to this condition.

2. Red meat

Animal meat like beef and pork contains arachidonic acid, a fatty acid that can cause inflammation, itching and irritation. Like all fatty acids, arachidonic acid increases the risk of skin disorders like psoriasis. Why can this food be harmful to psoriasis patients and trigger symptoms? The fat content in red meat can increase the risk of skin disorders like psoriasis, one reason why doctors recommend that you consume leaner cuts of beef and pork (around 3%, never more than 10%). These meats are also high in unhealthy saturated fats, leading to inflammation.

3. Alcohol

Wine, beer, and spirits cause dehydration, which can lead to skin issues and disorders. Alcoholic beverages are rich in sugar and cause inflammation, damaging your skin and increase the risk of skin disorders like psoriasis. Furthermore, the sugar content in alcohol is high, meaning that it can trigger numerous symptoms of diabetes and heart problems upon consumption.

4. Caffeine

Caffeine can increase the risk of skin disorders like psoriasis and trigger symptoms by elevating cortisol levels. Studies have shown that nicotine increases the risk for skin disorders like psoriasis. The increase in cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal gland when you’re exposed to stress, is the leading cause of this effect.

5. Wheat and rye

A widely consumed whole grain, rye has been linked to a higher risk of skin disorders, including psoriasis. Rye can also leave your digestive system distressed, manifesting as intestinal upset or diarrhea while irritating the skin and mucous membranes. Patients with psoriasis often have a genetic disposition to gluten intolerance.

6. Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain chemical solanine and nitrates, which can trigger the symptoms of psoriasis or make symptoms worse if you already suffer from this condition. Tomatoes can also make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
