Prostate Cancer: Risk Factors and Prevention
Following a study, it was found that prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related fatalities in the country. Unfortunately, one in every seven men develops prostate cancer throughout his life. What’s worse is that one in every thirty-nine men die of it. Usually, the deaths are prominent in older men.
There is no clarity on what causes prostate cancer. However, a few things increase the risk of prostate cancer and make one more vulnerable to the disease. These include:
Age
Usually, the risk of prostate cancer increases as one grows older. However, the risk is maximum after they cross their 50s. Below 45, the chances of prostate cancer are mostly rare.
Family history
In many cases, the mutations that cause prostate cancer are inherited. So, if one has had a close relative with prostate cancer, then they are, indeed, more vulnerable to the disease than others. It might be due to a chromosomal abnormality. Inherited mutations cause approximately five to ten percent of all prostate cancers in the country.
Race or ethnicity
Prostate cancer is more prominent in black men as opposed to white men. In this country, Latino and Asian-American men have the least probability of developing prostate cancer. On the other hand, African-American men have the highest risk of developing the disease.
Genetic factors
From the inherited features, BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have been often associated with prostate cancer. In females, mutations of the same genes leads to breast cancer.
Lynch syndrome
Men who have Lynch syndrome are at a greater risk of developing prostate cancer.

Quit smoking
Moreover, those who smoke regularly have a higher likelihood of dying from the disease. Also, smoking makes one more susceptible to experiencing a relapse of the disease. There is no better day to quit than today.
Exercise
Being overweight also increases one’s risk of developing prostate cancer. When one exercises regularly, they will be able to maintain a healthy body weight. Some of the best exercises that can be tried are walking, swimming, running, and cycling.
Be careful with animal fats
Consumption of animal fats increases the risk of prostate cancer. So, it is best to avoid meat and other foods containing animal fats, such as cheese, butter, and lard. The best thing to do is replacing animal fats with plant fats. One can substitute butter with olive oil, candy with fruits, packaged foods with fresh veggies, and cheese with seeds or nuts.
