5 Common Baby Products That Parents Should Avoid

Having a new baby is an exciting but stressful time in any new parent’s life. There are lots of things to consider and many things to buy, but before you start making that new baby gift registry, you should make sure you know what products are safe for your little one. While some products like a bottle warmer or a Newton baby mattress are safe, other products are not. Here are some common baby products you should avoid:

1. Bath seats
Bath seats for babies are simply unsafe and many people are trying to get them banned from being sold. They, unfortunately, make parents feel comfortable leaving their infant in the tub unattended, even just for a few seconds, however there is never a safe time to leave your baby alone in the tub. There are many instances of the seat tipping over or the baby slipping out that have resulted in infant death.

2. Bumper pads
While bumper pads may make your crib seem safer, in reality they make a crib less safe. There have been instances of babies pressing their faces into them, getting caught in the ties, or using them to climb out of the crib and fall once they are a bit older. In fact, crib bumpers are banned in some parts of the US, such as in Chicago and Maryland. So while crib bumpers may make your crib look good and seem safe, they are simply unsafe.

3. Walkers
The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that the US ban the sale of walkers but they continue to be sold for now. Walkers are unsafe due to the fact they help babies get around and make it so the baby can get somewhere unsafe or help them reach unsafe items. For example, many children have, sadly, fallen down stairs due to these walkers. It is best to avoid this product when shopping for your new baby.

4. Sleep positioners
Sleep positioners are often made out of foam and are marketed as a solution to babies who like to roll around in their sleep. They prop the baby on its side or back and are supposed to keep the baby in the same position all night. However, it’s possible for babies to roll over or slide down and end up suffocating on them. It is best to avoid these products and instead, make sure to put your baby to sleep on their back when putting them to bed.

5. Co-sleepers
Some parents like to sleep in the same bed as their child and have their child in the bed directly beside them. However, this is very unsafe for the baby as the parent could roll over onto the baby while they are sleeping and suffocate them, in fact, there have been quite a few cases of this happening. In addition, once babies are old enough to roll over, they pose the same hazard as crib bumpers as the baby could get their face pressed into the co-sleeper and suffocate. It is best to have a crib with just a firm mattress and nothing else to keep your baby as safe as possible.
